Role of Stem Cells

In the CAL tissue augmentation procedure CELLPORT CLINIC YOKOHAMA provides, fat with concentrated stem cells is processed for transplantation. Transplanted stem cells are considered to play the following four roles:

  1. Some stem cells become adipose cells (adipocytes) which form adipose tissue in the transplanted area.
  2. Instead of Endothelial Progenitor Cells, stem cells help form blood vessels in the transplanted fat and provide blood to adipose cells.
  3. Stem cells which survive in the transplanted area without any transformations will become mature adipose cells when the existing adipose cells surrounding them die. Adipose tissue is know to turn over (be replaced with cells of the next generation) very slowly (every 2-3 years). Therefore, adipose tissue can constantly be preserved without atrophying in the transplanted area.
  4. Since stem cells release components which promote formation of new blood vessels in the transplanted area, new blood vessels will be formed in the surrounding adipose tissue.
Thus, augmented adipose tissue can survive and is constantly preserved as a patient's own tissue.
